Summary

Questionnaire

What is your involvement in independent games?
My children and I write interactive storygames about a magical foster care home. I also make digital games for grownups that try to re-imagine the way we encounter stories. These games include improvised online writing games called netprovs.
What brought you to games originally?
When I was growing up, these new creatures emerged, well, two in particular: interactive fiction (Infocom games) and Choose Your Own Adventures. Once I had kids of my own, I wanted to play and build things with them. I wanted to engage their imaginations and to learn from the way they see the world. That led us to Mrs. Wobbles and the Tangerine House! We make games together as a way to explore life together.

And I truly love Indie games because they are driven by a communal DIY spirit and offer room to explore challenging territory as well as novel interaction. I'm also involved with the electronic literature community, where we try to dream up new forms of stories, poetry, and drama, which includes games.

What are some of your favorite games and why?
It's hard to beat Advanced Dungeons and Dragons for the way it engages with all the imagination one can bring to it. But I also love the work of Emily Short from the world of Interactive Fiction because she infuses all of her creations with such imagination and depth. And I shouldn't leave out the creations of Jason Rohrer, whose work pushes the boundaries of what digital games can be.
Who are some of your favorite artists (not related to games) and why?
My favorite writers are Italo Calvino, Borges, and Julio Cortázar. (They like to make games out of stories.)
What is your philosophy on creativity as it relates to games?
I want to make games that engage the whole person, especially their emotions and imaginations. Games that ask players to make difficult but meaningful choices and fun choices on top of that. My kids and I try to make games that excite the imaginations of children and adults with the force of those classic tales that are worth reading twice, thrice...or whenever we need to retreat into their pages.
What is your philosophy on creativity as it relates to life?
Creativity is our opportunity to collaborate with the wellspring of the world.
What defines community in your eyes?
Community is collaboration, people coming together to make life more joyful.
